The MAC address helps identify a specific device and its owner. For example, routers understand which device is connecting to them and to whom they should transmit information using network addresses. However, because of this, the MAC address is associated with risks of deanonymization and online tracking. Is it possible to change your MAC address? How can it be done on a specific device? Is it true that changing the MAC address helps maintain anonymity? Find all the answers and more in this article.

What is a MAC Address

A MAC (Media Access Control) address is the unique number of your network card (NIC), consisting of six pairs of characters separated by colons or hyphens (e.g., 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E). Essentially, it is the digital equivalent of a house or apartment number, which allows your device to be identified on a local network. For example, when you connect to a home Wi-Fi network, the router sees your MAC address and transmits data to the correct recipient.

How a MAC Address Can Threaten Your Privacy

When you turn on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, the MAC address becomes visible to other nearby devices. This poses a potential privacy risk because it allows tracking of your movements. For example, shopping malls do this to collect visitor statistics. Government agencies can do the same to verify where you were at a certain time. But the main threat comes from scammers and fraudsters. By obtaining your MAC address, they can use it to gain access to your data. For instance, they can spoof their MAC address to match yours, connect to a local network as if they were you, and steal confidential information.

Changing the MAC address can help you to:
  • Increase privacy by making device identification more difficult;
  • Avoid tracking in places where network addresses are monitored, such as stores;
  • Bypass access restrictions in networks that filter by MAC addresses;
  • Resolve connection conflicts in a network.

How to Change the MAC Address in Windows 10

Changing the MAC address in Windows 10 is only possible on certain adapters. If you do not find the "Network Address" field, changing it is likely not available.

There are two ways to change the MAC address in Windows 10. To do this through the connection settings follow these steps:
  1. Open the Control Panel. Press the Windows key on your keyboard, type "Control Panel" in the search bar, and click on the application icon.
  2. Go to network connection settings. In the search bar, type "Network Connections" and select "View Network Connections."
  3. Find the adapter you are using. Double-click on it, go to the "Properties" section, then "Configure" — "Advanced."
  4. Change the MAC address. Find the "Network Address" field and edit it. Do not use punctuation marks. Click OK to save the changes.
  5. Restart your device and check the changes. Press the Windows key on your keyboard, type CMD, select "Command Prompt." Enter the command IPCONFIG /ALL, press Enter. Find your adapter, check the "Physical Address" field, and verify the value.
To change your MAC address using the registry:
  1. Open the registry editor. Press the Windows key, find Regedit through search, open the editor, and grant it administrator rights.
  2. Go to Network Adapter Settings. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE — SYSTEM — CurrentControlSet — Control — Class — GUID {4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}.
  3. Find your adapter. To do this, check the DriverDesc value in the subfolders.
  4. Edit the MAC address. Right-click on the correct folder, select "New" — "String Value." Enter the name Network Address, then right-click on it and select "Modify." Enter a new MAC address consisting of 12 hexadecimal digits, without colons or other punctuation marks.
  5. Restart the PC. Open the command prompt, enter the command IPCONFIG /ALL, and check if the changes have been applied.

How to Change the MAC Address in Windows 11

You cannot manually change the MAC address in Windows 11. However, you can randomize it for Wi-Fi connections to make identification more difficult. To do this:
  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard.
  2. Type “random hardware addresses” in the search bar.
  3. Activate it using the toggle.
Important! This is only available for Wi-Fi connections. If you use a wired Internet connection, randomizing the MAC address in Windows 11 will not work.

How to Change the MAC Address on macOS

A regular user cannot change the MAC address on macOS, but they can randomize the network address. Before doing this, you need to check what it currently is. To do this, hold down the Option key and click on the Wi-Fi icon at the top of the screen. Find the line with the MAC address and write it down.

To randomize the MAC address on macOS:
  1. Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the top menu bar and go to Wi-Fi Settings.
  2. Click on the three dots next to the desired network and select Network Settings.
  3. In the Private Wi-Fi Address section, switch it to Rotating and click OK to save the changes.
  4. Verify the changes. While holding the Option key, click on the Wi-Fi icon. Check if the MAC address has changed.

How to Change the MAC Address on Android

To change the network address on Android, you need to obtain root access and install special applications.
Important! If you gain superuser rights, your device manufacturer may void your warranty, and your device will become more vulnerable to cyber threats.
If you are willing to take these risks, follow these steps:
  1. Obtain root access on your Android device. Download a special application such as FramaRoot, Kingo Root, or 360 Root. Launch it and select the "Root" option. After gaining superuser rights, restart your phone.
  2. Install an application to change the MAC address, such as BusyBox, Terminal Emulator, ChameleMAC, or Mac Address Ghost. Grant the app superuser rights, enter a new MAC address, or randomize it. Save the changes.
  3. Restart your smartphone to apply the changes.

How to Change the MAC Address on iOS

iOS does not allow manually changing the MAC address. However, devices with this operating system automatically spoof it when connecting to Wi-Fi. To set up network address randomization:
  1. Go to Settings and tap Wi-Fi.
  2. Open the "Network Information" section, find the desired Wi-Fi network, and tap the “i” icon next to it.
  3. Find the Private Wi-Fi Address toggle. If this feature is enabled, your device's MAC address is automatically replaced with a random one when connecting to a wireless network. If you disable this option, the MAC address will become visible to all Wi-Fi users. You can set different preferences for different Wi-Fi networks. For example, you can disable randomization for your home network but enable it when using public Wi-Fi.

How to Change the MAC Address Using an Anti-Detect Browser

If you want to remain anonymous online, changing your MAC address will not affect the degree of your privacy protection. This is because browsers do not show this parameter to websites. Instead, online services identify users through digital fingerprints.

A fingerprint consists of dozens of device parameters, from the operating system version and user agent to fonts, extensions, and hardware settings. Since no two devices have completely identical configurations, websites can accurately identify users based on digital fingerprints.

To spoof a fingerprint at the browser kernel level, you need to use an anti-detect browser, such as Octo Browser. This software allows you to create new profiles with fingerprints different from your real one. As a result, websites will see each profile as a different user, increasing your anonymity online.

Conclusion

Changing your MAC address helps bypass access restrictions in networks that filter devices by this parameter and resolve network connection conflicts. However, to better protect your online privacy, you need to use anti-detect browsers, such as Octo, in combination with proxies or VPNs. The anti-detect browser spoofs your digital fingerprint, while the proxy or VPN masks your IP address, providing much better protection against online tracking.
